Beyond Simplicity
My word for the past year has been simplicity. My life has been busy and somewhat complicated so I found a peace in keeping my designs simple, letting the stones stand on their own and speak for themselves. But now I am starting to feel a designer's restlessness and a need to move beyond simplicity. I want to mix things up by experimenting with color combinations, using different shaped beads and new metals like brass and copper. I am looking forward to incorporating faceted glass and lovely Swarovski crystals again. These two pieces are a sampling of what is to come...

My Bookshelf: Sadie Starr Presents Beading with Seed Beads, Gem Stones & Cabachons
This book was the first of many beading books in my library and my bible as a beginning beader. Although I don't do as much seed bead work as I used to I still love flipping through the pages to gaze at Sadie's beautiful work.
Sadie Starr is the great, great niece of the famed outlaw Belle Starr. She is Cherokee and Chata Indian and her heritage is reflected in her unique, hand-crafted wearable art. Oh how I would love to visit her Shooting Starr gallery in Camp Verde, Arizona. Her designs are breathtaking and truly an inspiration.
Some of the techniques I learned was the peyote stitch, how to make seed bead earrings, beading around cabachons, beading around a feather and beaded dream catchers. Other projects include barrettes and brooches, bolo ties, hat bands, covering objects, wire wrapping crystal pendants, key chains and many more. The pictures and instructions are clear and easy to follow. An excellent book for beginners and accomplished beaders. Highly recommended! This book may be out of print but you can still get copies through Amazon - get it while you can!

Spotlight: Brecciated Jasper
Brecciated Jasper is Red Jasper that was broken at some time during its growth. During the healing process, whole quartz formed in the previously broken veins. The final product is a rusty red stone with white streaks and web like patterns.
Brecciated Jasper, in addition to carrying the generic properties of Jasper, is an excellent "worry stone". It calms the emotions, eases stress, and helps bring happiness by allowing you to have a good outlook on life. Brecciated Jasper calms sexual aggressiveness, promotes sexual compatibilty and assists in overcoming sexual guilt or shame. Brecciated Jasper sustains and supports during times of stress, and brings tranquility and wholeness.
